Statute of limitation for HOA to require change to exterior modification

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? CA

What is the time limit for a HOA to require a change to a modification to an exterior (security door) they approved of by letter (requesting a change to the style used). We complied to the request. The letter of approval from the HOA was dated Jan. 25, 2006.
We received a letter of non-compliance for the color of the security door on July 31, 2009. The letter stated that we were to correct the the violation within 15 days of the letter date of July 14, 2009 (envelope post dated July 28, 2009). If the HOA was concerned about the color, why has it taken over three years for this violation to be brought to our attention?
What are our rights as to a statute of limitation in CA to have a change done after installation of the modification?
