Contractor dispute for excess charges not authorized

I hired a contractor to build an office in an existing warehouse. The contract listed everything to be done with a price for each job. The contractor now says that it was harder than he expected and is trying to charge me for for the work already agreed upon. Since I didn't authorize anything additional, can he charge me for things not in the contract?
