I received a letter from "Best Buy" today stating the following: "We attempted to charge your credit card and we were declined this charge. Since we were unable to charge your credit card, your records have been turned over to a collection agency". They are claiming that a mistake was made on a transaction that occurred "a year ago" when I bought a computer from them. They haven't contacted me before this letter "proving that there was a mistake and that I do indeed owe them money. So to correct their mistake they "attempted" to charge the amount to my credit card without my permission or even contacting me. So here are my questions: 1) Can a company make "charges" on my credit card without my permission? 2) What are the statue of limitations for their mistake in this transaction that occurred a year ago? 3) Can they send this to a collection agency even though they haven't contacted me with this "problem"? This happened long ago and I do not have the receipts to verify this. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.....

My response:

Without a State name, we can't even attempt to assist you, if we're even able to assist you at all. Laws are different everywhere.
