What is the name of your state?Hello I'm in California. Is there a deadline for filing bankruptcy in my state? And whats the cheapest way to file?

The "deadline" you speak of I'm assuming has to do with the new law ???

The DEADLINE nationwide is 10/17. On that day the new law goes into effect and its a whole new ballgame. It will be more tedious, more expensive, and more burdensome to file bankruptcy. If your income is above the state median, you will not be allowed to file CH 7 at all - you'll be forced into a 5 year Ch 13 that will require a VERY significant lifestyle change to make it thru.

California, again. Can you point me to an easy do it myself center? To file the chapter 7, that is.

Do it yourself center ?? No such thing that I'm aware of and the on-line places are pretty shakey.

Get yourself a copy of the Nolo Press book "How to File Chapter 7 Bankrutpcy" and do it yourself using the book. The book is ONLY good under the current law, after 10/17 it all goes out the window.

You better start running on that as well...

Already, lawyers in my state, if you intend to go that route, are setting the 14th as "D-Day"

The Nolo Press How to File for Chapter 7 Bankruptcy is temporarily out of stock and no backorders are available.

Check your local bookstores or library... good luck in securing a copy if you choose to go that way.

I am in CA too.
I am filing my own ch. 13 and found this site extremely useful. http://www.uscourts.gov/bankruptcycourts.html They have all of the forms, schedules and instructions. I also called my local BK court and spoke to an intake specialist. She answered all of my questions.

I would suggest trying Amazon.com too. I have seen a number of USED copies of the book for sale for about 1/2 the retail price.

You can use these forms for free. It's the same ones that places on the net charge for. Between the instructions on these forms, help from this board, and some going through Pacer it went fine for me.
