Can I file chap 7 when no income whatsoever

What is the name of your state? NC

I am unemployed and have been so for over 2 years now, despite numerous attempts to gain employment. I am a compulsive gambler (however have not gambled since 6/13/03) and consequently lost job (due to embezzlement), lost home (foreclosure), destroyed marriage and much more. To support myself after losing my job and not being able to find other employment, I had to cash in my retirement that I had with my last employer. I could not qualify for unemployment. My retirement money has since been depleted and through the grace of God and support of family/friends, I am hanging on by a thread. Creditors, to say the least, are coming after me.

Can I file bankruptcy - chap 7, if I have absolutely no income whatsoever. I cannot afford an attorney but if I have too, I could see if my family or church would help me out.

Thank you.

Nothing in the bk code says anything about employment status to file a chapter 7.
