Question

Recently contacted by collection agency regarding a debt to a department store I never heard of. They say it was initiated in 1991 or 1992. I told them I never heard of it. However, in looking at an credit report there is a debt reported long ago for the same amount, different store though, and I paid off that account. However, I only keep checks 6 to 7 years and don't have any that far back. The original department store is no longer. The credit agency said the purchased this debt for another credit agency. Nobody has contacted me until now and I have lived in the same place 15 years. It was written or charged off by original creditor prior to my paying it off. What are my options?
