| There is a company that is trying to collect on a repo from me. I am now married but was single at the time. They have been lying to my husband, telling him he will no longer be eligible for his student loans and financial aid, and I did not even know him at the time. We offered to pay a small monthly payment, which they were not even willing to discuss. They wanted only two bulk payments, which, as students, we can not afford. I realize that it is in my best interest to pay this off and wish to do so now that they have notified me that I still owe on the car (three years later, I might add). I have been getting phone calls ever since, where they verify that it is me on the phone and then hang up. Please help! Don't myself and my family have any rights here? I am now in CO, but the repo was in AZ [This message has been edited by marie1021 (edited October 10, 2000).] [This message has been edited by marie1021 (edited October 11, 2000).] |

| Go to the FTC website (http://www.ftc.gov) and read the FDCPA (Fair Debt Collections Practices Act). Once you know what your federal rights are, you will be able to handle them when they call again. Everyone needs to understand that there are specific actions that collection agents can take and also CAN'T take. The only goal that the collection agent has is to get payment, after all, he doesn't get paid unless he harrasses you into paying the debt. He will do ANYTHING legal or illegal to get money from you, even if you are not the legitimate debtor. Stand up to this slime-ball!! ------------------ Steve Halket Judgment Recovery of Houston JRS.Houston@excite.com ----------------------- This is my PERSONAL OPINION and is not legal advice!
