Fraud

I live in Massachusetts. I have recently tried to obtain a home equity loan and was turned down because of a bankruptcy charge on my credit report. I have never filed for bankruptcy. I tried to track it down and was told that someone is using my social security number of their bankruptcy charge. I was given names of the attorney and the trustee and they are both disconnected. How do I go about resolving this as it is ruining my credit.

The first thing you need to do is place a fraud alert on your name with the 3 CRA's. Any attempt to gain credit will require you to verify that you are the one authorizing the inquiry. Next, get a copy of your credit report from each CRA and check it for accuracy. Finally, dispute the bk with the CRA's. They'll have to verify it with the bk court and when they can't, they'll remove the derogatory info. Of course, in all of your communications, do it RRR.
