Question

Joint account holder

What is the name of your state? Oregon

I have recently gone through a divorce and I was awarded our car that there is still a joint account (I have not been able to refinance). I have maintained the loan, but the bank is telling me that because my ex has now filed bankruptcy, the entire account is coded that way and it will be listed as an account in bankruptcy on my credit report. They said they have to code it that way because they do not know which of us filed, just that someone did.

I realize my situation is backwards to most, but should they be able to report it that way on my credit report as well?

Any ideas would be appreciated,
J

No they should not. Pull your reports and see what they say.
Last year, the 3 CRA's settled a classaction lawsuit on those very grounds. They agreed not to report a nonfiler's bk on a joint account.
Don't pay attention to what a CSR says. Pull your reports and see for yourself.
