I have a $2000 hospital bill that has been sent to a collection agency. This bill was supposed to be covered by insurance, but they are refusing to pay until the hospital releases my records to them for closer review. I have sent 3 requests for release to the hospital, all ignored. Now Im told that since its gone to collection, nothing can be done, and that nothing less than full payment from me will settle the debt. What can I do?

I used to work for a major insurance company and the policy there was to have the hospital fax in the claim with all the RELEVANT records with it. This way, it's called a 'hot issue' and it must be paid regardless as to the history of the members account. I have been told that as long as you pay something to the hospital they cannot do this. Also, if the hospital won't send the information to the company, you can get a copy of your records and send in the information yourself. Call the insurance company and tell them the situation and let them deal with it. When the creditors call, give them the number to your insurance company and inform them that you do have health insurance and the fault lies with the hospital for not sending the proper information. Again, this is the way it's been done with the company I worked for and others have followed this practice as well. I know that there is a paper that the hospitals and doctors offices are having patients sign stating that if the insurance company does not pay the bill, you take responsible for it. If you signed a form such as this, it's in your hands, you are responsible for it. You basically told them it's ok for them to bill you, and that you will pay it. IF YOU EVER SEE THIS FORM DO NOT SIGN IT! That's a word of warning for all reading this.
Thanks!
