Medical Bills

What is the name of your state? GA
My father in law had a heart attack and then open heart surgery. His bills after the insurance are roughly $60,000 (the claims/bills are still coming in). He is 59 and self employed - construction. It would take him the next 20 years to pay off these bills - if the doctors even allowed him to pay over 20 years. He has other bills that are consuming a lot of his income. We are filling out financial assistance forms with the hospitals involved. The forms ask how much his home and any land he owns are worth. Are the hospitals allowed to put a lien on his property/land? Would it be wise for him to file bankrupcy? What would be the benefits/drawbacks? Thanks. Grecoprs

You don't give enough information. What is your fathers income and how soon will he be able to return to work? Does he own a home and does the home have any equity.
They may be able to place a lein {depending on state law} but, they must sue and win first.
