I live in Mass. I have had a outstanding debt with american express which I am about to pay off in full. Can I pay the credit card directly and ask for a commission on collecting the debt or do I have to pay the collections company they have hired. Also, how do I make sure they put the right insertion onto my credit report? Can I negotiate a lower payoff? Thanks, Bill.

You can pay the creditor directly. You can get a copy of your credit report to check. Yes, but most likely AX will not negotiate.
