Statute of Limitations Question

What is the name of your state? NC...If a creditor files for a judgment on a debt that has exceeded the statute of limitations, is there any recourse if you were not notified of the court date or was unable to attend the court date and a judgment was entered?

What is the reason that you were not notified of the court date? Was possible excuse was there, to not being able to attend (besides not being properly notified)?
