Exclamation

I am a victim of credit card fraud. Several years ago someone opened and used several credit cards in my name.

It took me a while to find out about this. I had recently moved. The applications for the credit cards went to my old address and the person living there (someone I know) opened the accounts and used the cards. Thus, it took me several years to find out about this because the bills and subsequent legal letters went to my old address and were opened by this other person. This person has since admitted to this to me and to the credit card companies, collection agencies and now lawyers (of the credit card companies) handling this matter.

As soon as I found out about this, I got in touch with the credit card companies. Several of these comapies are now pursuing the other party in this matter.

However, the lawyers from one credit card are now threatening to take me to court and sue me over these charges. Can they do this, in light of the fact that someone else has admitted to doing this? What can I do to protect myself (and my credit rating)?

Hire a lawyer to write them a nasty letter. If they try anything after that, they open themselves up to all kinds of problems. You can sue them for harrassment, unlawful collection practices, attempting to collect an invalid debt, attempted theft by coercion ....
