I am a foreigner with permanent resident status and my daughter is a U.S. citizen. I've been divorced for six months and am about to go bankrupt, through no fault of my own.
Prior to our divorce, my husband charged up a huge credit-card debt, then dumped all the bills on me in the divorce. He also kept all the property that was charged to these credit cards. My income was never sufficient to pay these bills and he knew it at the time of the divorce. He got me to sign the divorce papers by threatening me with deportation. I was afraid of never seeing my daughter again, so I signed without seeking legal advice--according to my husband's wishes.
I cannot pay these bills and bankruptcy is my only option. Will I be deported if I file bankruptcy? I can support myself, but not my ex-husband's bills. Please advise me! |
