Auto Sold At Auction/Reposessed

Califnornia auto lease contract: 18 months into a 24 lease, I fell behind in payments. Auto was willingly reposessed and a year later I was informed, sold at auction. I am now, according to Ford Credit responsible for the balance of sold price/balance due price totalling $1,600.00.
Am I legally responsible for this?
