bought from a private seller

I purchased a car last week from a private seller who in his ad and verbally told me the car was well maintained. I took the car to a mechanic and found the car need 12-1500 worth of work to the engine. Does the seller have any obligations to this. The state of AZ does not allow cars to be sold as is. The seller signed the title over to me but no bill of sale was given.
