What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? CA

I work at a shop which frequently rents clothing to customers. While I don't know the official company policy on the matter, my boss has been having me ask for and record ID numbers as a prerequisite to renting in an attempt to discourage people from falsifying information, then running away with the rentals. In reality, the company stores the information for a short period of time in paper form, but never uses it. It's just a deterrent.

Today, a lawyer came into the store to rent a tuxedo, and claimed that it was illegal for me to request or record her driver's license number. Is she correct?
