What is the name of your state? IL

We entered into a contract with a DJ for our wedding. We paid a $50.00 non-refundable deposit and signed the contract. We have decided we no longer wish to use that DJ and told him we wish to cancel. He sent us a letter saying we owe him the balance of the contract ($525) because the contract has a statement that reads: "Acceptance of the contract guarantees payment of the price agreed herein."

My question is do we owe him for services we will not be using just because of the contract. And if so, why is there a non-refundable deposit?

There is really no way that anyone can give you a specific answer without reviewing the full agreement. Also, part of the answer to your question would depend on the reason for your cancellation and the time between your cancellation and the scheduled date.

Generally, though, if there was sufficient reason and enough time for him to schedule another 'booking', I doubt that a judge would award him for not providing services.

$575 is a very reasonable price for a wedding dj, i charge $750+

A DJ business is not like other businesses, 90% of the days available to work is on weekends, most dj's do not have very much work during the week, except for High School Proms/dances and Holiday parties.

When was your wedding date? If it was close within the next 3-6 months, that is usually not enough time to find another couple who is going to have their wedding on the same day as yours, so naturally the DJ was counting on the money to support his business, if say your wedding was in 2004 then you should talk to the dj and remind him he has a year to find new clients for that date.

Happyroach, you clearly missed a decimal point in your post.... your services (just to spin some records and talk) CANNOT be worth more than $75.00!!
And that is assuming that you bring your crank victrola!!
