I live in Missouri and entered into a verbal contract with a construction company to have a pond dug on my property. The agreement was for them to dig the pond and not to exceed $5100 because that is all I had. Apparently because of scheduling issues, the construction company I hired was busy and inturn called another construction company to actually dig the pond. After the pond was dug I was given a bill for $10,000 by the second construction company. Can they bill me when I had no contract with them? What am I liable for and to whom?

I need to know if there is a statue of limitation in order to sue
someone who you performed work for and where never paid.
This occurred in New Jersey.

Thank you
