Hi.

We're getting married this August in NY (White Plains), but we both currently live in Boston, MA. The bride's father signed a contract last year in August for a reception hall in NY without first confirming with us. We did have a chance to look at the place with the bride's father, but we wanted October while he picked August, and the number of guests is about 50-100 more than we wanted.

We are now finding that the cost of the wedding may financially cripple the bride's parents and possibly us as well. We're regretting the bride's father's choice of reception hall, based on the per-seat cost and the number of guests he committed to. (The total cost of the reception alone will be in the low tens of thousands.)

In short, we want to consider the possibility of going to get married somewhere else. In general, how solidly legally binding is this kind of contract? Should we just talk to the reception hall folks first, or should we retain legal advice on this first? Or is this kind of contract so unbreakable that we should just grit our teeth and go through with it?

Much thanks in advance for advice on this matter.

(A happy wedding is at stake!)
