crap car?

my partner bought a 10 year old car 5 weeks ago from a trader. It was sold with no warranty but now the key wont turn in the ignition and after asking my friend who is a mechanic he said it would need a whole new ignition barrel. Have i a right to take this back and ask the trader to fix this as the car now wont move?What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)?
