What is the name of your state? Ohio

Friend returned his car to bank - unable to make payments during heart attack recovery/unable to work.
Unclear if he was advised car would be sold, or given opportunity to buy it back.
Car was sold, deficiency - about $500. Believe he was advised of sale shortly thereafter, he did not respond in appropriate manner. He heard nothing more from bank for ten+ years. He responded to initial debt collection letters received at ten + yr point, disputing amount owed on loan & requesting proof of payments. Creditor response did not address disputed amount or proof of payments. Now bank wants $500 plus 11+ years' interest +court costs, etc. (apprx. $1600), has cited him into court. Can anything be done about this?
Although not qualified for free legal aid, states he can't afford a lawyer and or the time/money to drive two+ hours from home to court especially with no lawyer.
