In an email to a home renovator I promised him that "when
I do decide to have my kitchen re-done I'll hire you to do
it if you want the job."

That was a few years ago. I haven't done any renovations
yet. He didn't specifically respond to the email with my
promise but he did ask me in an email last year whether I
had made up my mind about my kitchen and also mentioned
how pleased I would be with his work.

I'm just wondering if my promise above is binding on me in
any way or if I'm free to use another renovator. Is my
promise too vague to be enforceable? Does the fact that he
indicated his willingness to do the job after I made my
promise mean we have a binding contract? Thanks. What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)?

Under Common Law, the promise would fail because:
  • The offer was not accepted
  • The offer did not include material terms of the contract
There are probably more reasons
