I am in California and purchased a used car from a private seller two weeks ago. The clutch went out this morning, and the car requires $400 in repairs. How much responsibility (if any at all) belongs to the seller of the vehicle? I am grateful for any help.

If the seller sold you the car "as is, where is" , he has no liability. But if he made any claims that the clutch was in new or perfect condition and will last for thousands of miles, you can try to sue in small claims court. It will be your word against his. This is why anyone purchasing a vehicle, even a $500 beater, should have a mechanic give the car a good look over. A friend of mine has a shop and charges only $35 to inspect cars for potential buyers and he credits the money to the bill if the car needs repairs. He has saved some folks a lot of money.
