How much should I pay for a paint job

What is the name of your state? TN

My wife and I recenly asked two friends to paint our kitchen, dining room and den area, master bathroom and our kids bathroom using painting techniques to add texture to the wall while we were away on vacation. Part of the reason for having the rooms painted was because my wife applied puddy to the entire walls of the bathrooms and kitchen area, and we were unable to smooth it out and make the wall look good with normal painting techniques. My wife also applied green paint to a portion of the kitchen cabinet which looked pretty bad. As part of the deal the friends were to strip and stain just the area on the kitchen cabinets that my wife painted (about 6 2'x3' panels), to make it look like the rest of the cabinets. In other areas of the kitchen (away from the cabinets she painted) my wife also painted the ceiling green. As a result there were small drops of green paint on several of the cabinets. Also, the woodwork and old lighting fixtures around the mirrors in our bathrooms were to be taken down prior to them painting. Unfortunately, we were unable to get it done before we left for vacation. The were instructe to leave those areas unpainted and when we returned we would remove the mirros and woodwork so they could finish the painting...they agreed. The agreed upon price for painting the rooms was $762.62 including labor and supplies. We told the friends that we would cover the cost of additional supplies if more were needed because $762 was an incredible bargain...which is why we accepted their offer in the first place. We even asked them several times to make sure their estimate was correct.

So, when we arrived home the walls looked good except for a few sponts. However, the friends had did not strip the cabinets as asked but applied texture to the cabinets. They also stated that they stripped and stained all the cabinets in the kitchen. I say stated because I can still see a few drops of the original green paint (from my wife's over-ambitious painting) on several of the kitchen cabinets that they claimed to have stripped and stained. In the bathrooms they stained the woodwork and painted around the mirror--the same woodwork and mirros that we told them we were taking down and They now tell us that they spent 36 hours painting the areas, staining all of the kitchen cabinets (even the ones opposite of where my wife painted them) and that we owe them an additional $1,440 for labor and supplies.

I know this is only one side of the story, but our decision is to pay them $762 for the agreed upon work. Although we don't feel we have to we are also going to pay them for additional supplies to cover out of pocket costs for our friends. We are not going to pay them for the additional labor.

Are we wrong?

Thanks for your replies
