What is the name of your state? NY

Our flight from Rome to Lisbon was delayed (not weather related). There was a short layover in Lisbon for the connection to NY. The airline held the connecting flight to NY for the passengers on this plane. However, my mother is wheelchair bound and needed assistance disembarking. This was made abundantly clear to everyone at the airline, including the pilot who called ahead to have a wheelchair ready. The wheelchair was not ready when we landed and in fact my mother had to wait for an hour, after everyone had left the plane, for the wheelchair. Obviously, we missed our connection. The airline paid for hotel, meals, taxi, etc in Lisbon, but we all missed work the next day and were greatly inconvenienced. The airline refused so much as to provide us with free travel vouchers. Do we have any recourse?
