We received a check from Southwest Airlines to settle a claim for our daughter's lost bag that is in an amount far less than we claimed (about 50 %) and we intend to pursue this claim further. Because we had to buy a number of items out of pocket, however, we are anxious to get the cash back, but on the back of the check from SW it says that if we negotiate the check, we are relieving the airline of any further responsibility for the claim. Is this true? Both my wife and I have worked in the insurance industry for many years, and it is our understanding that an insurance company putting such wording on a check in the settlement of an insurance claim is not valid, but we have no idea if this would also hold true in our current situation.

Thanks for any help on this.
