What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? CT

We bought a puppy from a breeder who told us the dog had been treated for an illness but was healthy and verified healthy by a vet. Within 24 hrs of purchase, the dog became ill again and we had to rush him to our vet as an emergency. I contacted the breeder via email and he said he would hold our check for purchase and would reimburse us for vet fees.

Then 5 days later he cashed the check and is now saying he'll look at the copy of the vet bills we sent him. It sounds as if he's trying to get out of reimbursing us. I have the breeder's health statement and vaccines record and copy of his email saying he'd reimburse us.

What is our legal recourse?

Sounds like you might have gone to a "puppy mill." If you didn't see a copy of the breeder's vet bill stating that the dog was healthy, you have only the breeder's word.

Sue him.
