Towing co trying to collect debt on a stolen car

What is the name of your state? CA

I had a car that was stolen years ago. When I checked my credit report there is a $900.00 collection notice! When I investigated further it turned out to be a towing charge for the stolen car!! I moved several times since the car was stolen, and never received any collection notices. Am I responsible for those charges? There was a police report filed. Any help would be appreciated.

How many years ago was this. I believe the SOL collecting in CA is 4 years. Is the car still there/ is it worth more than 900$?
