Less than three weeks ago we purchased a used car and signed an "as is" statement. We were told there were no problems with the car, but within the first 24 hours it broke down. We've had it in the shop twice for a total of 7 days. The shop hasn't been able to figure out the problem because they've never encountered anything like this before.
It's obvious to us they knew there was a problem for several reasons. It happened so quickly after the purchase and happens almost every time the car is driven; they were very quick to accept our offer of $2200 instead of the $2500 they were asking; and they only owned the car a couple of months and drove it 500 miles on it.
Do we have any recourse against this seller since they obviously lied to us?
Thank you.

Though I agree with you that they MIGHT have been aware of the problem, but you would probably have a hard time PROVING that they were aware. And even if you could prove it, the 'as is' disclaimer pretty much kills you in trying to take any action against the seller.

See, any verbal statements of condition that might have been made by the seller are not of value to you. They are pure 'sales puff'. You, as the buyer, have the duty to verify the statements and to perform your own inspection on the vehicle. Failing that, you are on your own.

Sorry, but that is why they have an 'AS IS' disclaimer.
