What is the name of your state? Missouri
I took a memory card in for a one hour developement or downloan onto 3 cds.
The machine was broken down I was told when I returned an hour later. I could not come back as I was leaving on vacation and I wanted to make sure I could erase my card for new pictures. I came back 4 wks later(they say they keep things for 90 days). They cannot find them anywhere. What is my course of action now? What is appropriate compensation for a priceless item(s) that are now lost forever?

You're owed the value of the memory card itself. The photos are tougher, since they have no economic value, though sometimes courts award damages for losses of 'sentimental' value. Don't get your hopes up though.
