HELP! I am in New Jersey. I am really steamed.
I'm fighting with Voicestream Wireless. They have a
standard contract I signed when I purchased my cell phone
from them. The end date for this contract was April, 2001.
I told Voicestream I wanted to cancel months before the
contract end date. (I became disabled and unable to
work; I therefore would not be using the phone like I'd
planned to). They told me tough, I couldn't cancel
until the cancellation date in April.
I never used the phone and was
charged $24.18 a month anyway (standard fees, taxes,
etc) Once the official cancellation date came, I sent
Voicestream a letter cancelling the account.

Voicestream continued to send me bills. I called and
they said the next month it would definitely be
cancelled. Still no cancellation, another bill.

I then sent a certified letter (I have the return receipt,
they received it May 21, 2001) cancelling my account.

I received another bill due 7/02/01 for yet another
$24.18, plus last month's bill (which I never paid
because I cancelled!) for a total due now of $47.96.

I called Voicestream's offices this morning and was told
that it would take some time, the cancellation was going
through...blah blah blah....it takes some time, etc.
I asked to speak to a supervisor. I said I
was going to initiate legal action unless my account was
cancelled NOW, and the girl turned nasty and said she
couldn't talk to me because I mentioned 'legal proceedings'.
I said fine, let me talk to your legal dept. then, and
she continued to go on and on about how they couldn't
do a thing because I mentioned legal proceedings, etc.
She was really nasty now. I hung up on her.
WHAT CAN I DO? I do NOT want my credit rating suffering
from these stupid people, yet I will NOT PAY THESE BILLS.
I properly and appropriately cancelled my account, in
accordance with their contract, at the proper time, in
writing, via certified mail, and STILL they are playing
games and sending me bills.
HELP HELP HELP!!!!!!
Thanks in advance,
A VERY disgruntled cell phone user in NJ
