The word is copyRIGHT.
The issue however isn't copyright.
It's counterfeit merchandise (trademark, etc...).

He's in for deep civil liability.
There are a number of different criminal charges he can be subject to and they can be pretty severe (felonies). If he was arrested, he needs a lawyer.
