What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)?
Texas

Lets say a writer and and artist team up. The writer writes a story and the artists does illustrations about characters in the story written by the writer.

Am i right in assuming that the writer owns the character and the artist owns the illustration of that character?

Now they decide to leave each other after the work is complete.

Can the writer produce new stories using this character?
Can the artist produce new illustrations of the character or does he have to get permission?
Can the artist sell new illustrations of the character made after the work is complete?
Can the artist add additional story and sell that?

What agreements were in place between the two parties? Was the artwork done only after the story was completed? Was the artwork incorporated into the story in some way?

Thank you for your reply :)

What agreements were in place between the two parties?
nothing about copyrights really. Just distribution of money.

Was the artwork done only after the story was completed?
Yes. Could you specify why this is important?

Was the artwork incorporated into the story in some way?
Not really it was just depicting existing scenes. Could you specify why this is important?
