Downloading a film I own

I have a VHS copy of a film called "TheBrainiacs.com". I am wondering, since I already paid for that film, if I can legally download it free from the internet, maybe via BitTorrent? It's just for backup.

No. You can't make an illegal copy legal.
Your backup copy needs to be of the one you bought.

With BitTorrent you have to keep in mind that you are also uploading pieces to other users. Even if the downloading part was somehow legal, the uploading part almost certainly wouldn't be.
