To be more specific there are some Halloween post cards dating from 1900-1925 that I would like to use some artwork from. I was wondering if the copyright still applied and if so who would I contact?

If the cards were published prior to 1923, you can republish them or use them however you want without permission.

If the cards were published post-1923, you'll need to research who currently owns the copyrights, and see if they are still in force -- they may very well not be, but you'll need to do some serious detective work to make sure...
