This question has been bothering me for very long - legalwise! I hope some of you out there can help me. I am an educator, more of a mathematician.

I find that there are math test papers, assessement books, guide books with plenty of questions and only a simple answer key behind the pages to show the simple answer like for example:-

Q: What is a + b if a = 5 and b = 6?

A: 11.

What if I were to come out with an Answer Booklet for the above Assessment Book which shows the workings clearly to help the student get a better idea how the answers were arrived at, for example:-

If a = 5 and b= 6, then a + b is the same as 5 + 6 = 11.

My 1st question is if I work out the answers to all the questions in a particular assessment book and show the workings of the sums clearly, am I allowed to sell this book as my own copyrighted work for a fee even though all the questions were from the book which was not written by me originally?

Can I circumvent the copyright infringement by stating that the answers are for questions as appearing in XYZ book, published 2001 by so and so author by so and so publisher, but do not quote a single word of the question in the original book but only refer to the questions by numbers like, Exercise 5(a), Q1, the answer is listed as A1, Q2, Ans is A2, etc.

Please help me with this one as I think I can do a better job helping a lot of students this way and at the same time make some decent money doing what I love which is solving math problems.

Thanks and regards.
