There are a few Latin phrases that we would like to implement within a novel, however they appear to have already been mentioned as mottos for various universities. We are wondering if these sayings are permissable to use given that the words themselves are taken out of a different context.

Thank you.

What is the name of your state.

Mottos (Latin or English) aren't subject to copyright.
They might be a trademark.

We currently reside in NJ. We are only interested in including mottos that have not been used in any literary text. There are a few that have been used by other organizations, but would they be ok to use within a story? Thank you again for your prompt response regarding this matter.
