What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? MA

If I wanted to write a book on the history of a company, would I need to get permission to write it?

No, you do not need to get permission from a company in order to write a book on the history of the company - although getting permission from the company can potentially give you access to people and material you may not otherwise have, and getting permission can help you avoid some of the risk of a lawsuit arising from what you write.

You would be wise to have an attorney review your manuscript in its entirety when complete to ensure as much as possible that you have avoided any legal problems in your writing, and you should have an editor review the manuscript for errors in fact, and your publisher may (probably will) require releases from anyone you interview for the book, so you should have releases available for signing when gathering information for your book.

It is also wise to carry insurance to cover any lawsuits that may arise from the content of your book.

Good luck.
