    Question Proverbs Copyright?

A tattoo parlor in Hawaii would like to use Hawaiian Proverbs from a book to incorporate in some of their tattoos. Is the use of proverbs an infringement of copright law?

    Ouch! That hurts!

Definition of proverb: "a short well-known saying that expresses
an obvious truth and often offers advice"

    Source: MSN Encarta Online Dictionary

There are several reasons why you are allowed to use any
and/or all of the proverbs from the book, for the purpose
you indicated, so let me think of a reason why a particular
proverb could not be used on an individual person.

    I can't think of any!

In conclusion, I will quote an age old proverb:

"To tattoo, or not to tattoo?"

    My response:

"To tattoo, or not to tattoo?" is not a proverb - - and not even by your own definition. It's merely a question, and a line out of Shakespeare's "Hamlet."

    A proverb, while a truism, goes something like . . .

"A stitch in time, saves nine."

Ooooooooh, you were "that close," T-Designer !

    picky! picky! picky!

"To do, or not to do?" Ahh, it is a question, but is it not at the
same time, a saying and truism of what everyone experiences
almost daily, with a hidden message of advice (okay - I'm
stretching it here!), to think before you write, I mean act?

IAAL - It's good to know you are covering for me! Me thinks
    me "counsel" has deserted me!

IAAL and flying high 65 ... I added a link in my first reply to add
to the humor, or lack thereof. IAAL, I also added to my
rebuttal. Now, I'm beginning to wonder if I want you looking
    out for me. Just kidding!

Most of the questions I address are the FAQ type questions, and
I certainly would not attempt to address, with any sense of
confidence, some of the more complicated issues, which you and
the other senior members are more capable of handling, and
    providing a response.

    Respectfully,

    T-Winer
