Is it legal to sell items made from copyrighted knitting patterns without compensating the pattern's author? Can you do this with non-copyrighted patterns?

If you have permission to do so, yes. If you don't have permission, you'll need to get it -- whether obtaining permission will require compensation will depend on the copyright owner and what they want to do.

Can you do this with non-copyrighted patterns?
This would be legal.
