What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Oregon

Hello! I'm a crafter and I have a very simple question. Am I legally allowed to sell items I crochet or knit (on Etsy, for instance) from other people's patterns? I've heard it stated both ways. Some say you must ask first. Some say they have no right to state what you can do with your finished item, so which is it? At the moment, I'm asking each designer but I'd like to know for my records.

You have to have their permission and it depends what you're doing. A lot of craft things allow you to make things for sale. Others (notably things that are fabric patterns: McCalls, Butterick, Vogue) specifically DO NOT.
