Someone else's software screenshots in my book ok?

I'm in California. I am thinking about writing a book about a software package. What are the laws about including screenshots from that software in my book? Do I need the permission of the company that makes the software?

I contacted a couple of local software companies near my home. One is the worlds largest and the other a very small company. Both said they would require written permission to use to use screenshots (they both would supply approved photos) of their products plus they would require editorial approval of any description of their products. The above does not apply if the shot is used as a news story such as newpapers etc. You should contact the software company just to verify their policy as it would be used in your project.
