What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)?
N/A

Are teachers exempt from Copyright Laws? And if they are, to what extent?

P.S. To simplify the definitions on Wikipedia (lol), waht exactly does Copyright Law protect the owner from?

Oh yeah, and in accordance with 'Performing rights', if a teacher shows a video or movie in class - is that considered a 'public place'? And if so, is that illegal?

Thanks in advance :D

Update:
Read US Copyright Office for Fair Use.
What amounts to a Private school? Completely self-funded? Or can they be partially Government funded?

Some educational use qualifies for fair use, some does not. If you're copying a poem for discussion in class you MIGHT get away with it. If you xerox exercises from a workbook without permission, you will not.

Showing in a class is a public performance.

Many schools/systems have a blanket agreement for certain large classes of works.

There's not really any distinction between public or private schools
