What is the name of your state? N.C.

Is there any problem with using known names like ("Barbie") or ("Barney") in printed products as long as the likeness is not used? Does the use of the names necessarily tie them back to the well known products/characters?

Depends what you name Barbie or Barnie. If the item you name Barbie has anything to do with dolls, there would be a problem. The same goes for Barnie and dinosaurs. As long as a relationship between the names and the registered trademarks cannot be established, you are safe.
