The name of my state: I work in London, UK so no US state.

Hi,

I am currently working on a project to create a website aimed at hospitals of the developing world. The goal is to provide technicians there with information that is not available to them but that is essential to their work. Most of the information would concern medical equipment and include maintenance procedures, repair methods, user manuals and hopefully more. The website would be written in at least three different languages and it would be completely free to access.

However, my main obstacle is that I do not know what I can and cannot publish on this website. Do you think you could help me with any of the following questions:

- Publishing an image from another website/book: Do I need to ask for an authorisation? If yes, what are the specifics about this type of authorisation?

- Texts from a book: I am aware that copyrights make sure you can't copy or adapt somebody else's work. But say I find in a book information about cleaning up an anesthesia machine that I already have and want to publish, what ways do I have of doing that? This is information that isn't specific to a model but to a type of machine, it's also information that I could have deduced myself from working on a machine or that I could have come across somewhere else. I guess my main worry is: How do I publish information that is available elsewhere without attracting trouble?

- How could I apply a copyleft to my own work? (I have experience working in hospitals as well as thousands of pictures that I will be using.)

As you can see, I am still clueless about the legal aspect of my work so any advice would be greatly appreciated and useful!

Thanks in advance for any help!

Julien

Yes but the web is international. And most of the info I am referring to has been published in the US anyway. What would my situation be in the US at least? I did not find any equivalent website in the UK and I am really unsure of how to go about this. Anything would be useful to at least get me started...
