What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Oregon

What are my responsibilities to the author of an existing work if I want to use it as the basis of a new work. The existing work is a novel. I want to write a musical play.

Pretty simple... you contact the copyright owner of the novel... and get his/her permission FIRST.
