Current Defective Drug and Medical Device Lawsuits

These are some of the drugs and medical devices that are on the hot list for litigation right now. If you’ve had the kinds of injuries listed, it would be good to talk to an experienced attorney about your case:

Accutane - (severe recalcitrant nodular acne): This drug can cause very serious gastrointestinal problems like Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, and experts agree that these conditions may not be diagnosed for 2–3 years after the last time you used Accutane.

Bausch and Lomb ReNu with Moisture Loc (contact lens solution): Some people using this product have suffered from fungal eye infections (from the fungus Fusarium). These infections sometimes require extensive treatment, including corneal transplants and can result in blindness.

Digitek (heart failure and abnormal heart rhythms): Defective pills were sold having twice the dosage they were supposed to have. These overdoses have caused arrhythmias leading to permanent injury, heart attack, stroke, organ failure, and death.

Duragesic Patch (transdermal pain patch): Factors like heat from a heating pad, electric blanket, or hot shower or internal heat from a fever or overexertion can cause the patch to release a fatal overdoes of a potent narcotic. A damaged patch can do the same. Both Duragesic and generic patches have been recalled for damage or faulty seals.

Fosamax (post-menopausal and steroid-induced osteoporosis and Paget’s disease): This drug sometimes causes Osteonecrosis of the Jaw (ONJ), or dead jaw.

Gadolinium (Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) contrast dye): In people with various forms of kidney disease this dye can cause an incurable and often fatal condition called Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF), also called Nephrogenic Fibrosing Dermopathy (NFD).

Heparin (injectable anticoagulant): Adulterated forms of this drug were distributed by Baxter and B. Braun Medical between January 2007 and March 2008. These contaminated doses can cause severe allergic reactions marked by any of these symptoms: nausea, vomiting, difficulty breathing, dermatitis, edema, and low blood pressure.

Medtronic Sprint Fidelis leads (wires on implanted pacemakers): These wires have been known to fracture while in the body, requiring surgery to replace them. Certain models have been recalled (#s 6930, 6931, 6948 and 6949). If you have one of those models implanted, you might want to contact an attorney even if you haven’t had problems yet.

Ortho Evra (weekly transdermal birth control patch): This product has caused blood clot problems like pulmonary embolism, stroke, heart attack, or deep vein thrombosis. Anyone who was injured this way before a warning was added to the product on November 20, 2005 may have a case.

Paxil and Zoloft (various forms of depression and anxiety): If taken during pregnancy these, and a long list of other antidepressants, can cause birth defects like deformed hearts and persistent pulmonary hypertension (PPH), a sometimes fatal lung problem, in infants.

Stevens Johnson Syndrome (allergic reaction to one of several drugs): This is a reaction that happens in the skin and mucus membrane and can be fatal or cause severe permanent damage. This reaction has been caused by several drugs, both prescription and over the counter.

Stryker Howmedica Hip Implants (hip prosthetic): Stryker has recalled specific units of the Trident PSL Acetabular Shell and Trident Hemispherical Acetabular Shell. If you have one of the recalled units and have had problems, talk to an attorney.

Trasylol (prophylaxis for blood loss during surgery): This drug has been removed from the market because of its side effects. If you or a loved one has been given Trasylol during CABG, valve, or knee or hip replacement procedures and suffered kidney complications within the following 2 days that led to death, long-term dialysis, or kidney transplant, talk to a lawyer.
