Cigarettes

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? TX

I know the cigarette suits ran their course years ago. However, my whole life I have been plagued by the fallout of smoking. Two uncles smoked and died with COPD. I had to watch that happen. My grandfather smoked and died of COPD - for me it was countless hours caring for him, countless trips to the hospital, and worrying about him.

Now my father is in the end stages of COPD. He was diagnosed about 10 years ago and for me, it's been once again losing my life (I never smoked) to this disease and the fallout of COPD. My work was on the road, and for the last few years I haven't been able to do it. My career is kaput, and now I pickup work as I can just to pay the bills. It has to be work at home work, which precludes my career of voice work (requires a lot of travel to industry events) and video game events (requires a lot of time on the road.)

As a non-smoker, I feel cigarettes have stolen a lot of my life even though I never smoked them.

Did you have a legal question?

It's a bummer that so many of your family members have made such bad choices. You can't sue anyone because of it though.

Cigarette companies used doctors for endorsements, claiming cigarettes were healthy. That's how my uncles and father and grandfather were hooked onto cigarettes.

Their purposeful efforts to addict people to smoking have ruined my life.

They had the option to quit and there are plenty of support groups and medical aids out there to help them. They chose not to. This is the choices of your family, not the tobacco companies. Would it have been difficult to quit? Of course - but not impossible.

You also have the option of getting people to help with his care so you can work. It may or may not be covered by his insurance, but it is an option. You are again choosing to take this responsibility onto yourself.

IMO, anyone who chose to smoke, especially after 1964, was aware of the risks associated with smoking. The Surgeon General's warnings were released that year. Your family members decided to harm themselves. They are the parties who caused you harm.
